JUNUARY DUMP? ITS HAPPENING! NORTHERN ROCKIES WILL SEE SNOWFALL ABOVE 8000 FEET NEXT WEEK

Summary

Significant moisture is aimed at the northern Rockies for what could end up landing 12-15 inches of snow above 8,000 feet in Montana and 6-12 inches for the northern Tetons.

Short Term Forecast

POTENT STORM IS GOING TO BRING SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL TO MONTANA, NORTHERN WYOMING AND AREAS OF IDAHO EARLY NEXT WEEK!

The areas around Big Sky, Red Mountain Lodge will see significant snowfall above 8,000 feet Monday/Tuesday (9-16). Junuary will dump snow as far south as the Tetons of Wyoming with the highest amounts in Yellowstone National Park.  Expect wide areas of 6-12 inches in northern areas of Wyoming, with perhaps 9-16 inches in some higher elevations of Montana. Some snow will be falling over Teton Pass and even lower elevations near Jackson (Mixed rain) by Monday night (2-5).  Central Idaho will also reap some snow in the Sawtooth's (3-7).  I am personally in Mountain Bike Mode headed to Aspen this weekend and perhaps Jackson or Sun Valley next.  Significant rainfall of 1-2 inches is likely at lower elevations next week from northern Wyoming into southern Montana.   Wildflower Alert!  "All this moisture is going to create epic riding mid summer and we expect to take full advantage of ripping the trails this summer"  I often look for Sun Valley at this time of year for wildflowers and early season taking advantage of the lower elevations.  Jackson is in good shape with most lower elevation trails riding well.. Park City is shaping up nicely below Mid Mountain.  Peak wildflowers will be epic by mid summer.

Below: Total snowfall through Wednesday morning.

Extended Forecast

After a break mid next week there is a chance of additional moisture moving into the Pacific Northwest late next week into the weekend for the northern Rockies. The latest long range data from the climate predication center indicates a  trend for neutral conditions to persist into late summer. There are still hints at a slow process of a shift to a weak El Nino by late summer or early fall.
