OCTOBER IS COMING IN WITH A BANG 9-20 INCHES FROM NORTHERN MONTANA EXTENDING INTO COLORADO LATE THIS WEEKEND INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK

Summary

Cold air and significant moisture is dropping down from Canada late this weekend into early next week.  Highlights include northern Montana, north central Wyoming and Colorado especially areas like Steamboat, and Rabbit ears pass extending down to perhaps Vail Pass.  This will be the first significant storm for Colorado for the 2017 season! Montana will be measuring even deeper amounts in the northern portions of the State. Web cams showed some light snow fell today over the summits at Vail Ski area.

Short Term Forecast

In Colorado, Northwest flow should favor spots north of I-70 where 9-14 inches are possible by late Monday night in northern Colorado. Areas along or just north of I-70 will see steady snowfall from late Sunday through Monday night with 4-9 inches (Higher amounts possible near the summit of Vail). All mountains of northern and central Colorado will see snowfall with the highest amounts the further north and west of Eagle County. Summit County will be in the action with my early prediction of 4-9 inches.

Image below:  Colorado total snow through Tuesday morning favoring spots along or north of I-70 (Highest amounts near Steamboat or perhaps Vail Pass with orographics).

Montana in a direct hit Monday/Tuesday into most of the north-central mountains (Whitefish) where 12-18 inches will fall at the summits! Significant snowfall is likely by late Tuesday.  The Tetons earn 5-9 inches at the summits with higher amounts possible north of Jackson to the Montana border and the wind river range (9-15).

Below: Significant snowfall in north central Montana extending into portions of Wyoming through Tuesday.

Extended Forecast

Temperatures will remain below normal in the 7-10 day forecast.  Another cold system may impact the northern Rockies late next weekend.

Announcements

Remember its low tide to no tide currently so any early tracks could mean no tracks for the rest of the season.  Tread lightly as densities will be lowering as the cold core comes through the Rockies early next week.
