Three chances for snow during the next seven days

Summary

Friday and Saturday will be dry and warmer with highs in the 20s. Then expect light accumulations on Saturday night, perhaps 2-6 inches on Monday and Monday night, and a stronger storm should bring significant snow totals around Thursday, February 14th.

Short Term Forecast

Thursday was a cloudy and very cold day with high temperatures not straying far from 0F. We did see light snow during the day, though as expected, accumulations were light, just 1-2 inches, as the very cold airmass contained very little moisture.

Friday will be a different story with sunshine through the day and temperatures reaching the 20s during the middle of the day and early afternoon. Saturday will also bring comfortable temperatures with highs in the 20s and increasing clouds during the afternoon.

Then I see three chances for snow over the next week.

The first storm will be a quick mover on Saturday night. Most models are showing 1-3 inches between about Saturday sunset and Sunday sunrise.

The second storm will be a stronger system and will bring snow from Monday morning through Tuesday midday. My early thought about accumulations is 3-6 inches with soft snow on Monday midday, afternoon, and maybe extending into Tuesday morning. We’ll once again see very cold air on Tuesday, and this should limit accumulations during the day on Tuesday.

The third storm now looks like it’ll bring significant snow from Wednesday night through Thursday (February 13-14). This should favor the southern and central mountains with 6-12+ inches of snow and a powder day on Thursday with soft snow maybe lingering into Friday morning.

The University of Utah multi-model ensemble forecast clearly shows the three upcoming systems:

Extended Forecast

There is now slightly more model agreement through President’s weekend.

Following the snow on Thursday, we could see drier weather on Friday and Saturday, then another round of snow could arrive sometime in the Sunday or Monday timeframe.

And it looks like additional waves of energy should bring snow to Colorado through the week of 18-22 but that’s too far out for us to figure out any details at this point.

Thanks for reading!

My next update will be on Saturday morning.
