Saturday Soft, Southern Snow Sunday

Summary

The storm on Friday and Friday night dropped 2-6 inches across the state, so we’ll find pockets of softer snow on Saturday morning. There will be a few showers on Saturday afternoon and Saturday night, then the southern mountains should see steady snow on Sunday with 3-6 inches and maybe up to 10 inches in spots. The next potential storms will be around April 3-4, April 7-8, and April 10-12.

Short Term Forecast

Snow showers started on Friday midday and continued through Friday night. The 24-hour snow reports from Friday morning to Saturday morning show 2-6 inches for most mountains, and we were thinking 3-6 inches would be the general average for this storm, so there weren’t many surprises after all.

Breckenridge: 6”
Steamboat: 5”
Aspen Mountain: 4”
Beaver Creek: 4”
Copper: 4”
Eldora: 4”
Loveland: 4”
Telluride: 4”
Vail: 4”
Keystone: 3”
Powderhorn: 3”
Snowmass: 3”
Winter Park: 3”

Of the new snow that fell on Friday and Friday night, the majority accumulated on Friday night, so you will find freshies on Saturday morning. Since we are coming off of a week of warm temperatures during the day and cool temperatures at night, non-groomed slopes will have a hard, crusty surface. This means that the new snow will look tempting on many slopes, but the softest turns will likely be the few inches on top of the groomed slopes.

From Saturday through Sunday, we’ll see a lull in the snow, then lingering energy and moisture over the four corners (the meeting point of Colorado, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico) will bring another round of accumulating snow on Sunday.

Here are the upcoming 48 hours from the CAIC 2km WRF model.

Saturday
Just a few showers.

Saturday night
Snow chances increase in the southern mountains late a night.

Sunday
The best chance for snow will be in the southern mountains with a few showers elsewhere. Amounts in the southern mountains should be in the 3-6 inch range, and maybe up to 10 inches, especially around Wolf Creek.

Sunday night
A few showers will linger with light accumulations.

Again, the best chance for accumulating snow this weekend will be on Sunday in the southern mountains.

Extended Forecast

All models show plenty of action during the next two weeks, with storms every few days, though right now it looks all of these systems will be of weak or maybe moderate strength.

The timing of the upcoming snow should be around:

* April 3-4

* April 7-8

* April 10-12

We’ll figure out the details of each storm as they get closer.

Thanks for reading!

My next update will be on Sunday morning.
