Good days comin' up

Summary:

  • Snow starts Saturday night with 4-7 inches
  • Snow squalls on Sunday with a few more inches
  • Period of heavier snow Monday with 4-7 inches
  • Best snow ends by Tuesday morning
  • Best powder days Sunday, Monday, Tuesday morning

Details:

I have no big changes to the forecast. The incoming storm is looking good and Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday morning should all be powder days for central and northern Colorado.

As of Saturday morning the storm has made landfall and is pushing lots of snow across the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies.

All of this moisture and energy will move over Colorado in multiple waves from Saturday night through Tuesday morning. The National Weather Service shows this northwest flow bringing 10-20 inches to most of central and northern Colorado, with up to two feet possible in some spots. I generally agree with these numbers. Utah and Wyoming could even do a bit better than this with a few spots hitting 30+ inches.

Saturday: Dry start, then more clouds and snow showers by late afternoon.

Saturday night: The cold front will hit Steamboat in the evening and most other areas by midnight. Expect 4-7 inches of snow, falling heavy at times especially as the front comes through.

Sunday: There could be a lull in the snow in the morning, then snow squalls will hit during the midday and afternoon hours. Expect 2-4 more inches, though accumulations will be somewhat random depending on who gets the heaviest squalls. This is a day where it'll dump an inch in 20 minutes, then the sun could peek out, and then another squall could move through. Snow, sun, and repeat.

Sunday night: There could be a lull in the snow, though there should still be flakes in the air from I-70 north to Steamboat.

Monday and Monday night: Another wave of energy will cross Colorado and there could be a period of heavy snow. Favored areas from I-70 and north could get another 4-7 inches during the day. Temperatures will likely be around 10F, so dress warm. The snow will taper off by evening.

Tuesday morning: Most of the snow will be over by late Monday night or Tuesday morning, but with sunrise temperatures very cold and perhaps a few inches falling after lifts close on Monday afternoon, Tuesday morning could be another fun time to ski powder.

Tuesday, Tuesday night, and Wednesday: Look for a few flakes from Aspen to the north, but temperatures will warm and this is not conducive to heavy snow.

Longer range: Thanksgiving through early next week looks like it'll be in the dry side. There could be a few Thanksgiving flurries, and maybe some snow showers over the weekend, but I don't see any significant storms at this point. The pattern does appear to become more active during the first week of December.
