Warm early next week, cool late next week

Summary:

  • An inch of snow fell on Summit County on Saturday night
  • Sunday, Monday, Tuesday will be generally dry and warm
  • Chance for showers each of these days, mostly in the southern mountains
  • Tuesday will be the warmest day
  • Cold front drops temperatures Wed/Thu/Fri
  • Best chance of snow on Thu & Thu night in northern mtns & east of divide
  • Dry weather likely next weekend
  • Next storm possible around April 8 (+/- few days)

Details:

Saturday was a sunny and warm day for most of the state, then a band of showers pushed through on Saturday night, working from north-to-south. Most locations saw only gusty winds and some spits of rain or flurries as this band moved through, but the higher elevations of Summit County picked up about an inch of snow overnight (Keystone, Breckenridge, Copper, Loveland, also Ski Cooper in Eagle County).

Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday will offer mostly sunny and dry weather. There will be a chance for afternoon pop-up showers for the southern mountains on Sunday and Monday, and for all mountains on Tuesday. But most of these showers will produce little precipitation and it may come in the form of rain drops as temperatures will be very warm. Tuesday will be the warmest day of the week.

On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, temperatures will cool considerably as a storm pushes through northern Colorado. The best chance of snow will occur on Thursday and Thursday night, and will likely be confined to the northern mountains and areas along and east of the divide. At this point, my best guess is that the northern mountains west of the divide could see a couple of inches, while the mountains east of the divide and north of I-70 could see perhaps 6 inches or more. Hopefully I'll be able to fine tune the forecast over the next day or two. Regardless, Thursday or Friday morning should offer the best snow conditions of the week.

Then next weekend should be dry, with the another storm pushing into Colorado sometime around April 8th, plus or minus a day or two.

Yes, it's warm out there, but that doesn't mean we should despair, because there is plenty of corn to enjoy! I was out on Vail Pass on Saturday and took this picture around 1230pm as conditions softened nicely on a low angle, southwest-facing slope.

Have a great Sunday, and I'll post my next update on Monday morning.
