Update

In my post two days ago, I talked about how a cold front would keep Thursday’s temperatures cool over eastern Colorado and how this cold front would lead to low clouds forming along the eastern slopes of the mountains.

As the models forecast, the cold front lead to temperatures in the 60s on Thursday, and low clouds did push up against the mountains.

Sam Collentine (who writes the I-70 Daily Snow and also does a LOT of behind-the-scenes business work at OpenSnow) and I hiked to the summit of Twin Sisters outside of Estes Park to take in the view above the low clouds.

Above the clouds looking north to Estes Park:

Looking southeast with Boulder’s Flatirons visible in the upper-right:

To the west, clear air around Longs Peak:

Walking down the trail, the clouds began to push higher and further west:

Near the bottom of the trail, the clouds moved in making for beautiful light through the forest:

Dustin Schaefer, the man behind the camera at Loveland, sent over this amazing time lapse from the Ptarmigan Lift at 11,700 feet. The view looks toward the east and shows the cool air + moisture = clouds moving toward Loveland from the east, hanging around for a few hours, and then retreating.

Looking ahead, expect more cool air with comfortable high temperatures across the state.

While early August can bring very warm temperatures to Colorado, that is not the case this season.

Here are the 15-day temperature forecasts for three cities across the state. While I don’t have much confidence in the exact numbers for days 8-15, I do have reasonable confidence in the trend of cool or at least not-too-hot temperatures.

Denver, very cool Sunday, Monday, Tuesday.

Eagle, delightful weather in the 70s.

Durango, perfect with highs in the upper 70s and low 80s.

Enjoy hiking, biking, climbing, kayaking, grilling, or whatever else you love to do outside!

I’ll check back in a week or so with another update…
