Keep it cranking!

Summary

Light to moderate snow through Monday afternoon. Short period of intense snowfall on Monday evening will likely bring road closures due to accidents. Snow continues on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Dry pattern prevails on Friday and remains in place through the first few days of February.

Short Term Forecast

Before jumping into the forecast, I have to share a photo of the BLOWER conditions at Vail on Sunday morning. I took this photo of Jessica Cohen at about 9:30am.

The snow finally tapered off on Sunday afternoon before we quickly began to receive our next round of flakes on Sunday night. Light to moderate snow continues on Monday morning and this will remain the case through Monday afternoon.

All road surfaces from the Eisenhower Tunnel through Vail remain under an icy and snow-packed mix. Travel shouldn't be an issue through Monday afternoon but always stay tuned to CDOT for latest information.

Come Monday evening, we'll see our final round of very heavy snow push through the corridor as a strong cold front blasts into Colorado. This short period of intense snowfall between 6pm and 9pm will bring reduced visibility and road closures due to accidents. Please, please, please do your best to avoid this timeframe.

We'll then continue to see mixed periods light to moderate snow on Tuesday and into Wednesday morning. All road surfaces will remain under an icy and snow-packed mix but travel speeds should be close to normal. Wednesday will be our final powder day in January so take advantage.

For reference, here's a look at the latest snow forecast, according to the high-resolution 3km NAM-WRF model, through Wednesday morning.

This model can always be a bit overdone but the next 48 hours will provide our final dose of healthy snowfall for January. Bring it on!

Lingering flakes will fall on Thursday under cool, northwest flow before mostly sunny skies prevail on Friday and remain in place through the final days of January.

Extended Forecast

This mild and dry pattern will continue to stick around through about February 4th/5th before all longer range models point to a shift back to an active pattern. Fingers crossed this is holds true.

Thanks for reading, travel safe, and enjoy these final powder days for January!
