Warm, wet weather coming Wednesday-Thursday

Summary

Temperatures will be rising at Idaho's ski areas today and especially on Thursday as a Pineapple Express and Atmospheric River curls into Idaho from Northern California. Snow levels are forecast to rise to as much as 8,500 feet in the Central Mountains and perhaps only 7,000 feet in the West Central Mountains. A cold front will bring snow levels down rapidly on Thursday night, and new storms will bring fresh coatings of snow Friday-Sunday.

Short Term Forecast

Light amounts of snow are forecast for ski areas in southern Idaho on Wednesday, and then the Pineapple Express will move in Wednesday afternoon and Thursday. One-hundred percent chance of rain is forecast at most of Idaho's ski areas on Thursday, with snow levels ranging from 7,000 feet to 8,500 feet depending on location. Five to 10 inches of snow are expected in the highest mountain tops on Thursday.

The snow level at Brundage Mountain and Tamarack may be slightly slower than it's expected to be in North Idaho and in the Central Mountains and Eastern Idaho, according to the National Weather Service.

A rapid cool-down is forecast on Thursday night and snow levels will drop on Friday, and more precipitation is expected to bring more snow through Sunday.

Extended Forecast

Brundage and Tamarack Resort are forecast to receive 4-9 inches Friday-Saturday, Schweitzer is expected to receive 2-4 inches on Saturday, Silver Mountain may get 3-6 inches, and Pomerelle is forecast to receive 2-4 inches on Friday and Saturday. Smaller amounts are expected to fall at Idaho's other ski areas.

The storms are expected to taper off on Monday and Tuesday, with a slight chance of snow in some locations. There should be some clearing during Spring Break week. But the overall weather pattern will be unstable through next week with cooler than normal temperatures and higher than normal chance of precipitation.
