On Your Marks, Get Set

Summary

As things sometimes go, the storm that was expected tomorrow night is weakening. The good news is that it is paving the way for a much stronger pattern of low pressure that will be taking over later this week and through next week as well. It's a small price to pay, but we'll see the goods a little later than previously expected.

Short Term Forecast

Schooling It - Courtesy Schweitzer Mountain Resort

Today and Tuesday

The ridge of high pressure is still in place today but it will start to break down tomorrow with the remnants of the weak wave. With the ridge, expect temperature inversions to persist with warmer conditions on top of the hill and chilly, foggy readings at the bottom of the lift.

Wednesday through Saturday, January 20

Very moist Pacific air will start moving in from the southwest on Wednesday with high snow levels around 7,000 feet. We'll see rain below that level on Wednesday night and early Thursday.

A cold front will sweep through on Thursday night, making the most of what is left of that Pacific moisture. Look for several inches of new snow out of that wave between Thursday night and Saturday, well-over a foot in some places!

This forecast is pretty similar to recent model solutions but the timing is a little bit later and the snow amounts for the Idaho Panhandle are significantly higher. Looks like Schweitzer will be schooling it for quite awhile.

Extended Forecast

Sunday, January 21 through Wednesday, January 24

Now, this is more like it.  If you're into this trend, the 8 to 14-day Outlook through January 28th  tells the same story. Once we get this powder train rolling later this week, we're in for a nice, long ride.

Check back for more details this week. Thanks for Reading.
