Daily Snow One Sentence Summary: Easter bunny will have a tough time in the Highlands of WV, MD, and W PA this weekend, 20-30 inches of snow blankets an already deep base to leave us with some seriously epic very late season skiing.
Today/Tomorrow: Cold and clouds continue with highs at WV, MD, and W PA ski areas topping out around or just below freezing with lows near 20. 1-3 inches of additional snow likely today and tonight on top of the 20-30 inches that has already fallen this week!
Weekend: Forecast from earlier this week remains valid: Saturday should be an amazing day for skiing – I repeat – AMAZING. Warm weather and intense mid march sun mean some of the best spring skiing in recent memory. Sunday will likely feature increasing cloudiness with the potential for showers as a storm makes it way in from the west.
Next week: While the long range forecast certainly isn’t as epic as it has been over the past few weeks – things certainly still look good for skiing the first week of April. Showers will dominate the forecast for Monday/Tuesday but give way to chillier temperatures and possibly scattered rain/snow showers in the highlands. Next few storm systems have the potential for more wet snow over the highlands (rain for low level resorts/major cities) – we will wait and see for now. As of now, I know at least Wintergreen in VA and Snowshoe and Whitegrass in WV promise to offer April turns.
Daily Snow One Sentence Summary: If you have the day off... go SKI! Conditions are out of this world amazing for mid January let alone the end of March. Many local areas have extended their seasons for at least the next week so get out there and take advantage of the cheap lift tickets and great conditions.
This week: Another 5-10 inches of snow is likely for the higher elevations of WV, MD, and W PA before mid week (on top of the current 6+ inches that has fallen). Highs will top out around freezing for the highlands and closer to 40 for most other areas through Wednesday before slowly climbing for the weekend. Many areas remain open with 100% of terrain open. Base of NATURAL snow is 30 inches at 4300 ft in WV and will likely grow to 35-40 before this round of snow is all said and done! Even Ski Liberty in PA decided to stay in the game and spin their lifts for at least one more week.
Weekend: Saturday should be an amazing day for skiing with warm weather and intense mid march sun! Sunday will likely feature increasing cloudiness with the potential for showers as a storm makes it way in from the west.
Daily Snow One Sentence Summary: First day of spring? Doesn't feel like it - snow showers tonight and tomorrow will add up to another 2-5 inches for the mountains in WV, MD, and Western PA - possibility exists that a major costal low will develop Sunday night into Monday bringing mixed precipitation to the area.
Today-Friday: Clipper system will move through this evening into tomorrow, adding another 2-5 inches to the base in WV and Western MD and PA. High temperatures will struggle to hit the mid 20's tomorrow and will barely eclipse freezing on Friday so expect conditions to remain stellar for this weekend!
Weekend: Amazing skiing continues throughout the area with mid winter conditions and temperatures in the high 30's to low 40's! The ski season is definitely NOT over... get out there and support our local resorts as we experience some of the best late season skiing on record! Base on snowmaking areas is 2 ft+ throughout the area and most natural snow areas remain open with 1-2 feet remaining in the trees in WV (Whitegrass reports a 24 inch base of natural snow at 4300 ft with 2400 acres open for telemark skiing)... I repeat, the season is NOT over!!!
Next week: Winter continues with another costal storm possible early in the week. Precipitation type is in question right now but the possibility exists for a major dump over WV, western MD, and western PA!! Start planning your Easter skiing, many areas will likely remain open for at least the last weekend in March and possibly into April.
Daily Snow One Sentence Summary: Calendar says Mid-March but winter is still going strong in the Mid-Atlantic! Mixed precip today will add another few inches to the base in the highlands before a change to rain this evening then back to snow showers through mid week!
Summary - Skiing will be very good this weekend with most resorts still operating with 80-100% of terrain open!
Daily Snow One Sentence Summary: Absolutely amazing weekend of skiing with waist deep powder Saturday morning changing to spring corn by Sunday – a little rain this week will wet the base before things refreeze and WV/MD/W PA mountains get another round of snow with 2-5 inches likely after .2-.5 inches of rain before the weekend.
Week Ahead: Warm weather persists through today before a front moves through tomorrow, bringing with it a period of scattered showers (rain) during the day on Tuesday. Whatever base is remaining by tomorrow PM (should be plenty for areas w/snowmaking and in the highlands of WV) will refreeze overnight on Tuesday and get supplemented by a few inches of snow between Wednesday and Friday (limited to high elevations). Temperatures will be below average for the end of the week into the weekend, with highs around freezing for the highest elevations and near 40 for the lower elevations.
How will skiing this weekend be? Answer is AMAZING for this time of year with 90%+ of terrain open for all resorts with may resorts still at 100% capacity. Only issue could be a bit of rain/snow that might sneak into the picture on Saturday.
Remember this is the time of year when most resorts are forced to close due to a lack of snow – this year, most resorts still have 40+ inches of snow for a base. Expect skiing to last into April for areas in WV, MD, and W PA (as long as people want to ski, they will stay open!) Get out and take advantage of some seriously amazing deals on lift tickets and lodging.
