Good morning everyone! We are in the final days of the ski season, and we’re in for quite the storm. Temperatures are in the 30’s and 40’s, with clouds streaming in across the northern half of New England as the low inches closer. Here is a look at the Plymouth State webcam, where dark clouds are looming:

Temperatures will slowly drop throughout the day as a backdoor cold front sags south, meaning by the late afternoon we can expect 20’s and low 30’s across all but southern New England. This is when we can expect the precipitation to begin, as the low propagates eastward, and the leading warm front remains just to our south. Most of the region is in either a winter weather advisory or a hazardous weather outlook, in preparation for the snow and ice expected with this storm.

The precipitation will begin as snow in northern sections of VT and NH, transitioning to sleet/freezing rain and becoming more widespread as the evening goes on. By Sunday morning, areas extending from western NY through most of central New England can expect sleet, freezing rain and snow as temperatures remain near the freezing line, with warmer air aloft. Expect more accumulations of ice than snow from this storm. This will be a very poor day for skiing, so if you want to head out on the slopes before the storm moves in, today is the day to do so. We will likely see a small break overnight and into Monday, but as the cold front on the backside of the storm moves in, the precipitation will ramp up again. Conditions will be gusty, with E winds at 10-15 mph, with gusts up to 25 mph. See details on the first half of the week and the ending of this storm in the long term.

As we move into the third week of April, we begin to look at the end of the skiing season. This weekend is unfortunately the last for many resorts, but some might stay open a few more days from the precipitation we’ll receive tonight and tomorrow.

Monday will start off with a mix of snow and ice on the mountains, but will quickly turn over to rain by late morning. With temperatures rising into the upper 30’s on the slopes, it’ll be a slushy spring skiing kind of day on the slopes! Here’s the model run for Monday morning into Monday night:

Following that system, we won’t see much until a potential rain storm this Thursday. As mentioned before though, most places will be closing for the season by the time that storm rolls around. Jay Peak is one mountain that will still be open next weekend if you’re looking for some final runs this season!
