Summary

New England will welcome winter back this week with snow squalls likely on Thursday night with an Arctic cold frontal passage that will drop temperatures into the teens on Friday night. 1-3" of snow is possible across the higher terrain of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

Short Term Forecast

Light snow showers are possible across the higher terrain of Massachusetts and Connecticut this afternoon. Otherwise, no significant winter weather is expect over the next couple of days.

Extended Forecast

An Arctic cold front will pass over New England on Thursday bringing an elevated likelihood of snow squalls to the region. Ground temperatures are still quite warm and any snow is not expected to stick around at lower elevations.

Many ski resorts across New England are making their preparations to start making snow. Overnight temperatures below freezing this week and next week will mean that snow guns will start firing up.

Many resorts are gearing up for snowmaking. Loon Mountain's (Lincoln, NH) website says "The latest forecasts for the upcoming week call for a significant shift to colder weather on Tuesday, which is exactly what we need to fire up our snowmaking system. If the forecasts hold true, we could begin making snow as early as Tuesday night. After speaking with our snowmakers, I can tell you that they're more than ready to jump into action as soon as tempertaures fall. It's only a matter of time." Bretton Woods' (Bretton Woods, NH) website also says  "It’s getting colder and we’re getting excited. Our crew of snowmakers are itching to get out there and fire up the guns as soon as conditions are just right. We expect to begin blowing snow early this week. Once the guns are running the race to open begins, stay tuned to our report for updates."

The Beast of the East (Killington) over in Vermont already has their snow guns fired up...
