A three-storm series

Summary

Following a few days of dry weather, three storms will hit New Mexico through the middle of next week, and the skiing should become softer and deeper with each system. Then we’ll experience a dry period for 7-10 days.

Short Term Forecast

The first in a series of three storms arrived on Thursday night and snow should continue through Friday with a few additional inches of accumulation.

Then after a break on Friday afternoon and early evening, a second storm will bring snow to all mountains in New Mexico from late Friday night through Saturday evening. Most mountains should receive 4-8 inches and Apache, in the south, could do the best with over a foot of snow. The deepest skiing should occur on Saturday afternoon or first chair on Sunday morning.

We’ll experience another break on Sunday and Sunday evening, then the next storm should drop snow from Monday through Tuesday, with the deepest snow occurring on Tuesday.

The five-day forecast, which is available here (https://opensnow.com/state/nm), shows the potential snow accumulations for each mountain.

Often times, with back-to-back-to-back storms like this, the best skiing occurs at the end of the third storm when the base is the deepest and softest.

Extended Forecast

Following these three systems, we’ll experience a period of dry and sunny weather from about Wednesday, January 25 through at least Friday, February 3. Then the longer-range models hint that storminess could return to the western US starting around February 5th.
