Snow ahead, but not much

Summary

There is no substantial snowfall in the forecast ahead, but there will be limited light snow mid-week and possibly again early next week. There is some indication, the last part of November, will be more active for snowfall. However, the models have been teasing a more active pattern in the extended forecast for weeks, so I have high hopes, but low confidence in a big change. Right now, barring a major weather surprise, I expect limited ski area openings for Thanksgiving - with Whistler and Crystal the best bet, because of snowmaking and some high elevation snowfall.

Short Term Forecast

Unfortunately, higher pressure will prevail through mid-week and that means more dry weather for the ski slopes in the short term. The models have been consistent with a weak weather system sliding down the coast with light snowfall later Tuesday into Wednesday. This is not the game-changing big dump we are looking for. It will be worth a few inches falling the north Cascades and maybe more six inches at Whistler. Much of eastern BC and the northern Rockies also receive modest new snowfall. The snow levels will be 4,000 - 6,000ft – with snowfall mainly on the mid and upper slopes. See map below for24 hr snowfall ending late Wednesday. The weather will become mainly dry again after Thursday into at least the early part of the weekend with no additional snowfall.

Extended Forecast

There is great uncertainty, but models once again indicate a change to a more active pattern in the extended forecast next week. However, we have been consistently burned by that optimistic snow outlook in the past couple of weeks. the problem has been, as we move closer to the target date, the storms continuously weaken on the updated forecast models. Therefore, my confidence in the extended forecast is low - even though typically the last 10 days of November are the often the most active of the winter season.
