NW Open Snow Inside Story

Expect more sunshine, with dry, cold weather continuing until next Monday/Tuesday. A persistent high pressure is driving the forecast for now, and that high pressure zone is configured to divert the stormtrack away from the NW, as well as producing descending dry air. Both of those features combine to produce mainly clear skies. There are some areas of fog expected, as cold air is trapped near the surface, which is called an inversion. There will be no snowfall in the NW until next week.

Don't give up hope. Forecast models are indicating a change in the weather pattern for the NW by Monday-Wednesday. Models indicate the high pressure over the NW will weaken. Then  a group of low pressure areas, traversing the Pacific, will bring precipitation and return snow to the Cascades. Details are vague right now, due to the fact the wet pattern is still a few days out. However, longer-range models show the active pattern continuing and more snow to fall in the mountains, later in the forecast period beyond next Friday. Another positive thing... right now I don't see any Pineapple Express or atmospheric river warm patterns. Snow levels will range from 3000-4500ft. Each storm will show a cycle of warmer, then cooler air.

Later in the week, the models indicate a more pronounced and typical winter storm pattern returning to the NW with occasional lowland rain, and mountain snow. I don’t see anything extreme, but certainly more consistent.
