Sunny spring skiing ahead

Open Snow Northwest

New snow came in overnight as forecast. The totals were modest (3-8”), but Whistler saw over a foot. There was some wind, so some areas may be wind affected – but a quick look at the cams this morning showed snow on the trees – usually a good sign the wind wasn’t too bad.

Today expect some partial clearing with a few snow showers. There is a trace to 2” of new possible today. Expect a great day skiing with the new snow….and Sunday looks really nice with more sunshine.

A strong high pressure will build in for the next four days. That will mean dry weather, with partly to mostly sunny skies. It will definitely feel like spring skiing with the sunshine and longer days. The snow might get soft on the south facing slopes mid-day, while north-facing and shady spots will be more chalky.

The freezing level will soar to almost 12,000 ft ,with the building high pressure over the NW. Should we worry the snow will melt with the high freezing level? NO.

Even though that high level is typical of a freezing level in early summer it’s too early for a big melt. You will not see widespread melting. Maybe some minor melt in the parking lot or lower slopes. One key to sustained, widespread snowmelt is staying above freezing at night for several days…and that is not going to happen The days are still too short and sun angle to low for substantial melt. Melt just doesn’t happen in any meaningful way until later in March and April. Our deep snowpack is here to stay.

The sunny ski days will last until Wednesday, then we will see some weak weather systems move through later in the week and weekend with minor snowfall.
