Update

Hope ya had a good summer – it was a warm and dry one. But don’t worry the recent summer weather will not translate into a winter of snowfall blues. No doubt, you can already feel the changes in the air, as fall is unfolding. We’ve had a little light snow in the upper elevations so far, but nothing noteworthy.

In the short term, the weather looks mainly dry and seasonable. Nothing unusual, which is normal. Typically the atmosphere doesn’t flip to fall/winter mode with increasing chance of Cascade snow (and rain lowlands) until later in October, around the 20th. Whistler tends to start a bit earlier and with more conviction.

The winter forecast is looking good for the NW! A La Nina is on the menu. The La Nina is weak, but the strength doesn’t really matter. Most La Nina’s deliver respectable Cascade snowfall, near or above normal – so expect a lot of powder days, favoring lower snow levels. Of course there are no guarantees, but I am very optimistic. I’ll have more about the seasonal forecast coming up soon.

Included in the line-up is an avalanche refresher course with IFMGA Guide, Martin Volken. Plus, your Open Snow meteorologist - Larry Schick will have the long-range forecast winter snow forecast.
