The storm came through as expected overnight. This time the cold front moves through slower than the storm last week, and snow showers fired up behind the front. I am headed out early for first tracks so the only reports I have so far as of this posting are 8 inches at Bear Valley where the forecast was for 6-9 inches overnight. For the East side of the lake the overnight forecast was for 3-6 inches, with Mt. Rose reporting 6 inches and Heavenly reporting 7.
I am headed out to Alpine Meadows and will have some live videos on the TahoeWeather Instagram and Facebook pages.
The final wave of moisture for this afternoon is rotating into CA this morning.
Plenty of cold unstable air to keeps snow showers firing today adding 1-3 inches of additional snowfall.
It's cold today with temperatures in the teens on the upper mountains this morning and 20's at lake level. Highs today only into the 20's on the upper mountains and 30's at lake level. The wind gusts have dropped this morning with gusts to 50-60 on the ridge tops after gusting over 100 mph last night. That should drop to 40-50 mph today. Overall it will be a nice mid-Winter like powder day!
Here are the ski resorts you can ski the powder on today with lift service. Sierra is also open from 10-2 with limited lifts for their final day today.
We stay cool most of the week with highs Tuesday-Thursday into the 30's on the upper mountains and 40's at lake level. There is a splitting system moving through Wednesday night that could drop an inch or two of snow on the mountains, especially along the crest. That could bring in some clouds and gusty winds Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning.
The weekend looks nice with lots of sun and mild temps. We warm into the 40's on the upper mountains and 50's at lake level Friday, and then 50's for all elevations Saturday and Sunday!
Looking at the long-range the European model keeps our weather pretty quiet through next week. The GFS is hinting at a possible trough again by the middle of next week. So we will keep an eye on that. We have 2 ski areas open next week, Squaw/Alpine, and Mt. Rose. So I will keep an eye on any possible final snowstorms trying to sneak in the last week of April.
