Cold Start to October...

Summary:

After warm weather today, colder weather along with the chance for precip will arrive by the weekend.  We could see a couple of systems bring rain and snow to the area.

Details:

We are continuing to watch a pattern change coming this weekend.  We have been enjoying some summer weather this week with a ridge over the region, but that will be replaced by a cold trough this weekend.

Here is a look at the GFS forecast for high temperatures today.

and here is Saturday...  a 30 degree drop.

The initial cold front will be dry, but the trough moving in will keep the storm door open to storms pushing into the Pacific NW.  The first low may move in Sunday bringing us some light rain and high elevation snow.

What is more interesting is a 2nd wave that may push in for Monday.

The Canadian model keeps most of the precip to the North.  The GFS below brings in light amounts of precip, with snow levels dropping near lake level.  This could bring a few inches of snow to the mountains.

Even more interesting is the European model which shows up to an inch of liquid near the crest with this system.  That could bring the first significant snowfall of the season.  It is the outlier right now so we will have to keep watching, but the trend on the GFS and European model has been wetter.

The temperatures by Monday will be even colder with highs in the 40's, or even lower depending on how much precip we see.

Long-Range:

We should see high pressure start to build in with clearing starting next Tuesday with highs rebounding back into the 60's.

We could see another trough push in the following weekend with another storm pushing through.

So we have some things to watch here over the next 2 weeks.

Stay tuned...BA
