Cold and Blustery...

Update

When I checked the temperature in Truckee at 6 a.m. it was 3 degrees.  There is some snow on the ground in the valleys so the overnight temperatures really bottomed out.  That should have made for decent snowmaking all night on the mountains.

For today we will slowly climb through the 20's, maybe peaking out in the mid-30's for highs.  The East winds are blowing today with upper mountain gusts to 60 mph.  So some lifts could be on hold.  The wind chill factor will make it feel much colder than the air temperature.

Tuesday as high pressure begins to build over the West the winds will calm down and temperatures will begin to warm into the 40's during the day through Friday.  Overnight lows in the teens and 20's should allow for more snowmaking and expanding open terrain.

By the weekend temperatures could break into the 50's at lake level.  High pressure will be dominating Western North America, blocking storms and sending them all into the East along with the cold air.

This pattern is expected to last through all of next week as well.  Two weeks from now the forecast is similar with the ridge still over the West and trough in the East.

ridge2

The ridge is weaker by the 18th with storms trying to push into the West Coast.  But there is no confidence in that happening this far out.

There is snow today in the Rockies which is the snow on the 2 week snowfall forecast below.  Then all of the snow is in the East the next 2 weeks.

For now we have decent coverage on the upper mountains with the ski resorts picking up 3-5 feet so far this season.  The lower mountains are continuing to open more terrain with snowmaking.  We will be relying on snowmaking over the next 2 weeks as long as the overnight temperatures stay cold enough, so thank a snowmaker if you see one or know one.

I will be posting the November stats this week once all the data comes in, and I will be looking at the long-range in more detail as well as comparing what we are seeing to other seasons.

Stay tuned...BA
