The beginning of this week will feel much different that this weekend with a big change coming on Thursday. And for once, I am feeling more confidence in the forecast for decent snow to come finally come to the Upper Midwest.

Today and tomorrow will feel warm for mid-November with temperatures creeping into the 40s in northern areas and nearing 50 in the Twin Cities. Along with the higher temperatures, the winds could be gusty at times, especially Wednesday and Thursday ahead of the cold front that will move through the region on Thursday afternoon.

Thursday night and into Friday is going to be the big story, with what finally looks to be the first decent snow of the season for most of the region. With the passage of the cold front matching up with the moisture moving on Thursday night, there is a good chance that while the precipitation may start as a wintery mix, it will switch over to all snow before the storm passes.

Most of the models agree on the movement of the system as it will slide northeasterly through the area on Thursday night and Friday. Locations near the Twin Cities and along the St Croix river will have their best chance for moderate snow before sunrise on Friday. While areas in the Northwoods, along Lake Superior, and in the UP will see more snow during the day on Friday and flurries into the weekend.

Additionally, areas along the lake have a good chance for the snowfall to become lake enhanced due to warmer lake temperatures, especially in the Gogebic range and in the UP.

Right now it looks like areas near the Twin Cities will end up with 2-4” of snow, the Northwoods and North Shore could see 1-3”, and areas in Northern Wisconsin and the UP could see 3-6” by Saturday morning.

Will keep updating this as the storm gets closer with details on when the best snowfall will come, but it looks like the first decent storm of the year is on its way!
