Cloudy and rainy

Summary

A train of lows across the midwest will keep our weather active for the next week. However, the arrival of April is quickly switching most of the precipitation from snow to rain.

Short Term Forecast

A low pressure center moving across the midwest this afternoon will bring rain to southern and central Minnesota/Wisconsin this afternoon lasting overnight. Since the temperature profile never getting below freezing, this looks like entirely a rain event for these locations. Further north the forecast is a bit more confusing with the warm air aloft still, but colder temperatures near the surface, especially where there is still snowpack. That being said, I don’t know if that layer will be deep enough, so we might be looking more for freezing rain or sleet rather than snow accumulation tonight. Maybe a dusting at best along the north and south shores and into the UP.

As the low moves across Iowa and Missouri over the weekend, enough moisture should be around to fire off the occasional shower over the weekend. However, because of the temperatures, it looks to be all rain. The only exception to this could be Sunday night where a quick switch over to sleet/snow could happen in areas around Lake Superior. That being said, it’s just shower activity, so little or no accumulation is expected.

Extended Forecast

Looking into next week things really quiet down Monday afternoon and stay quiet through Wednesday afternoon when another low gets across the Rockies. With all of the moisture in place, would still expect cooler temperatures (40s) and cloudy skies further south, with slightly colder (30s) and cloudy skies north.

Finally looking way into this time next week, another low looks to slowly take its time moving across the midwest. However, right now the models completely disagree on how far south the low will go. The GFS keeps things very similar to this week, with the low moving through Iowa, allowing moisture and precipitation to fall across our area. However, the Euro takes the low through Oklahoma, cutting off most of the moisture from that system from getting too far north, but allowing a clipper to pull further south from Canada and effect northern areas. All of that being said, with the exception of overnight hours and heavy bands of precipitation, its looks to almost be entirely rain still.

Model snowfall forecast between now and April 2nd (10 days from now)

Announcements

With very little snow in the forecast and many locations now closed during weekdays, will most likely not update again until the end of next week.
