Cool in the east, then action shifts to the west next week

Summary

Following the monster snowfall in the northeast on March 14th, cold air and snow will stick around while most of the west is warm. Finally, after weeks of warmer weather, the west will cool off next week and snow should hit most mountains between March 20-25.

Short Term Forecast

Most mountains in northeast Pennsylvania, New York, and New England are reporting 15-35+ inches of snow from the Nor’ Easter that raced up the coast on March 13th and 14th.

In the wake of this storm, cooler-than-average air will stick around the northeast through March 20th while temperatures in the west are well above average.

Snowfall during March 15-20 will generally mirror the temperature pattern, with snow showers continuing in the northeast and higher-elevation snow in the northwest (watch for high snow levels due to warm temperatures).

Extended Forecast

Next week, from March 20-25, the northeast will continue to experience cooler-than-average temperatures while cool air also begins to work on to the west coast.

And after weeks of warmer and drier weather for many areas of the west, snow will return to the forecast from the 20-25th for all regions from New Mexico to California to Washington.

The forecast for the final 5-6 days of March show that temperatures in the western US will continue to cool off, and this should mean that there will be another one or snow storms before the end of the month.
