Looking to After Thanksgiving

Summary

Quiet weather to finish the work week. A brush-by system this weekend could bring a snow showers or two to the mountains of northern Utah. Otherwise, we stay dry thru Thanksgiving. Chance for more active weather after Thanksgiving Day.

Short Term Forecast

We are generally under high pressure ridging still.  This will keep us relatively warm and dry today and tomorrow.  However, the pattern is getting a bit overly amplified, which is going to allow a system to drop down the backside of the ridge and along the Rockies.  This is a weak, moisture-starved system, but it will brush Northern Utah on Saturday.  We should see some clouds and cooler temps and could also see a snow shower in the Wasatch and Uintas.  Don't be too surprised if you encounter brief snow up in the mountains on Saturday. Here is the total precip expected by GFS for this weekend "storm":

Unfortunately, it's another system that won't do much to aid in our snowpack.  We return to dry weather for the first half of next week.

Extended Forecast

A week from today is Thanksgiving Day.  That is generally when we may be likely to start seeing changes to the pattern. There has been a lot of disagreement in the models over just how this pattern shift will play out.  Right now, it seems the Euro and GFS are generally in agreement.  There looks to be three separate waves of energy that push in off the Pacific over that holiday weekend.  The first looks like it will lose most, if not all, of its energy prior to reaching Utah.  The second piece of energy may arrive sometime in the 24-hour period while you're digesting your turkey next Friday.  This looks generally weak, but could bring us some snowfall.  Then, there could be a stronger system later in that weekend (November 25).  Of course, by this point we are 11 days out into the forecast and confidence is extremely low.  There is a lot that can change between now and then.

In summary, I have moderate confidence that we will see some type of storm energy over Thanksgiving weekend.  But low confidence in the timing or that it will be anything significant.

Due to low confidence in anything significant, the stoke level remains low.

Hopefully we can creep up into "Medium" stoke levels if we get a couple days of consistent model runs.
