If you've lived in the area for awhile, you know that getting snow in the high Wasatch during the second half of may is not extraordinary.  However, getting snow down to the valley floors is very rare.  This week, we may be in line for the latter as an extremely cold arctic airmass drops into the region.  Ahead of the coldest air, we will see scattered showers today and Tuesday.  The cold front itself pushes in late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.  

Snow will develop with the cold front and continue through much of the day on Wednesday, especially in the high elevations.  Accumulations will be likely above 5,000 feet, mostly on non-paved surfaces.  NWS has already issues a Winter Storm Watch for the morning commute to be affected.  Accumulations according to the latest 12km NAM show the following for Upper LCC: 

Up to a foot of snow by midday on Wednesday with additional accumulations likely in post frontal showers through Thursday.  Unfortunately, all ski areas will be closed as Snowbird is not spinning lifts Monday-Thurs.  Hopefully you can hike for the goods.  If not, then hopefully it stays cold enough to keep things fresh on the north facing aspects in the high elevations.  

Overall, I'd say 8-14" of snow in the high elevations with perhaps up to 20" of snow in select favored areas.  

If we get solid accumulations down to 5,500 feet or so, we could have some major issues with the weight of snow on trees with leaves.  For those of you who are done with winter weather, the good news is that we should warm up again for the weekend.  No signs of additional arctic air after this week.
