January 9th, 2017: Soupy Sunday Closes Tahoe!

The Soup De Jour for this past Sunday was a sloppy mess at Kirkwood as insane amounts of rain fell on high elevations leaving ski resorts in a tight spot. Other than Northstar's Gondola, every resort in Tahoe remained closed due to flooding, increased avalanche danger, and high winds.Soupy Sunday was not a great day to be up in the mountains.
Saturday the 7th brought in a blanket of chowder to Kirkwood. If you could withstand the high winds on ridge tops, extremely low visibility, and sopping wet gear then you could find some decent turns in sheltered tree areas. A definite trash bag day out there as a mere four runs left even the most waterproof layers completely soaked. Sunday kicked off with a soupy tomato bisque feel as buckets of rain began adding weight to snow and presenting extreme avalanche danger for Tahoe region and beyond.

The temperatures appear to be dropping and snow is now falling at the base of Kirkwood. It will be interesting to see when resort will be able to start running lifts as heavy winds and large amounts of snow accumulation will continue to present dangerous ski conditions. The good news is that the outlook for the rest of the week is looking much colder, which means no more need for soupy metaphors. Hunker down for a couple more days, the good skiing is on its way.
Cheers,
