Weather for the weekend and early next week

Three ski Colorado ski areas will be open this weekend!

Arapahoe Basin has been open since Sunday the 13th and will stay open on a daily basis.

Loveland opened Thursday the 17th and will also be open daily through the season.

And Wolf Creek just announced that they will open for only this upcoming weekend, 19-20th, then will close until resuming full-time operations later in the fall.

Both Arapahoe Basin and Loveland will see a few inches of snow Thursday night, but then a dry and sunny weather pattern will rule the skies over the western US for at least the next 7-10 days.

When it's dry and warm over part of the country, that usually means another part of the country is stormier, and that's exactly what will happen to the eastern US for much of the rest of October.

This map of average temperatures (celsius) tells the story, with above average in the western US and below average in the midwest and east.

As storms move through New England later this weekend and next week, temperatures will be cold enough for some snow to fall over the highest peaks in New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. This fly on the webcam of Mt. Washington, New Hampshire will have a front-row seat as the temperatures cool and snow falls.

Weather patterns often get stuck in a rut for at least a week or two, so I wouldn't be surprised to see the "warm in the west, cool in the east" pattern persist through the rest of October. The Northwest and Rockies were fairly cool and stormy from late September through mid October, so it's only fair to pull the old switcheroo and send this type of weather to the east coast for a while.

Enjoy your weekend!
