Snow on the ground, next storm September 18-19

Summary

On Wednesday night, a dusting of snow accumulated on Colorado’s mountains above about 10,000. See pictures below! The next chance for high-elevation snow will be next week, around September 18-19.

Short Term Forecast

Snow!

We saw thunderstorms on Wednesday, and then cooler air arrived on Wednesday evening as the last showers moved across the state. These final showers dropped some flakes above 10,000 feet, mostly in the central and northern mountains.

Pictures!

Behind the storm, the cooler air on Thursday morning is evident in this map, which shows the temperature change from Wednesday morning to Thursday morning. Most of Colorado is 10-20F degrees cooler than 24 hours ago.

Another fun image on Thursday morning is the visible satellite, which shows a few snow-capped peaks in the central mountains and low clouds lingering over the northern mountains.

For the rest of Thursday, the snow will quickly melt as the sun rises and the low clouds dissipate.

From Thursday through Saturday, look forward to sunny and dry weather. Then on Sunday, a few showers might creep into the forecast.

There are plenty of amazingly fun activities to enjoy in the mountains during the fall, so get out and have a blast in the comfortable temperatures and gorgeous scenery. In addition to biking, hiking, climbing, or whatever your outdoor passion is, there are also fun events going on most weekends, with the Breckenridge Wine Classic as just one example. In short, there is plenty to do!

Extended Forecast

The next chance for a cooler storm with high-elevation snow will be Wednesday and Thursday, September 18-19. Depending on the exact track of that system, we could see anything from a few flakes to a few inches of snow, likely above about 10,000 feet.

In the meantime, I hope that you have a wonderful next few (sunny) days, and I’ll be back on Monday, September 16 with an update on the potential storm for Sep 18-19.

Thanks for reading!
