Snow above 12,000 feet

The last week or two of August usually gives Colorado our first taste of winter, and this August is no exception!

Snow on the peaks on Wednesday morning

A slow-moving disturbance is moving through central and eastern Colorado on Wednesday morning. This disturbance dropped showers on Tuesday night, and those showers are on-going now on Wednesday morning. Summer weather forecasting in Colorado is pretty easy, with most days starting dry and then storms developing during the afternoon. Today is one of the exceptions as it’s raining and snowing at sunrise.

The snow is accumulations on mountains above about 12,000 feet. Here is a look to the north from Berthoud Pass, along the continental divide toward the Indian Peaks Wilderness. The webcam is at an elevation of about 11,300 feet, and the snow line is roughly 12,000 feet.

The disturbance

You can see the center of the weak storm over eastern Colorado. The precipitation is rotating around the storm in a counter-clockwise motion, wrapping back into central and northern Colorado.

The next 7 days

Showers will stick around on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

The weather during the weekend should be drier, however, as a weak systems will cross Colorado on Friday night, leaving drier air behind it. I can’t rule out a weak shower each day this weekend, but most of Colorado will be dry most of the time. It’ll be another fantastic weekend to hike, bike, climb, etc!

The first half of next week should remain on the drier side, then we’ll likely see a few more showers during the end of next week, into the first few days of September. Not a washout by any means, but more atmospheric action is likely.
