Storms are lining up

Summary

One more quiet day on Monday ahead of light snow on Monday night and into Tuesday. Stronger storm in the works for Wednesday. Another quiet day on Thursday before we monitor a train of storms beginning next weekend and continuing through the final week of 2018.

Short Term Forecast

Monday

Increasing clouds throughout the day, with temperatures rising into the upper 20s to low 30s. Any chances for flakes should hold off until Monday night.

Monday Night - Tuesday

Off-and-on periods of light snow showers will return on Monday night, along with cooler temperatures. Accumulations will range from a dusting to maybe an inch or two through Tuesday afternoon.

For travel, the road surfaces will turn wet and icy. Travel will cruise along at normal speeds.

Tuesday Night - Wednesday

This is when we'll begin to see the action ramp back up along the corridor. This period continues to trend in the right direction and we should see a quick period of moderate to heavy snow sometime around midday Wednesday as a good amount of moisture and the nose of the jet stream slide into northern Colorado.

Look for 3-7 inches from Tuesday night through Wednesday and I would not be surprised to see a few areas report higher totals.

This will make the road surfaces icy and snow-packed through Wednesday and we'll have to keep a close eye on midday Wednesday for potential travel impacts due to heavy snow.

Thursday

We'll catch a break on Thursday as our weather pattern begins to shift toward a stormier period to end 2018. Look for mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the 20s.

Extended Forecast

Next Weekend & Beyond

Following the break on Thursday, we could see another weak storm slide through northern Colorado on Friday into Saturday. We'll then have to watch Saturday night and into Sunday for an even stronger system to make its way into the corridor.

The ensemble snow forecast above for Vail Pass has a lot of uncertainty/lighter totals but I fully expect to see healthy totals as we enter the final week of 2018.

For travel, snow tires, AWD/4WD, and/or an alternative traction device will be necessary if you're planning to travel along the corridor from December 22nd through December 31st. More details to come with each individual round of snow.

As we've been mentioning over the past few days, the weather pattern is really lining up to increase our chances for additional storms through the week of Christmas and into New Years. We'll first be watching Monday, December 24th and again around December 26th for two more rounds of snow. All good news.
