Looking up?

Summary

Partly to mostly cloudy through Wednesday afternoon. Snow returns Wednesday night, with decent totals possible through Thursday morning. Dry on Friday and into the first half of Saturday. Another round of light snow from Saturday evening through Sunday morning. Additional chances for snow late next week.

Short Term Forecast

Partly to mostly cloudy skies are in place on Wednesday morning and this will remain the case throughout the day. Temperatures will be in the upper 20s ahead of chances for snow as we head into Wednesday evening.

Scattered snow showers will begin to fall between 6 pm and 8 pm on Wednesday evening. Periods of light to possibly moderate snowfall will then take over on Wednesday night, followed by off-and-on showers through Thursday morning.

Below is a look at the latest WPC snow forecast for the I-70 mountain corridor. I'm pleasantly surprised to see the forecast trend up slightly since yesterday's update.

In total, look for 2-5 inches from Wednesday evening through Thursday afternoon and maybe a touch more if the snow machine can get cranking for a short time on Wednesday night. Our primary wind direction will be from the north so keep a close on Keystone's snow stake cam for sneaky good totals on Thursday morning.

For travel, the road surfaces will become icy and possibly snow-packed on Wednesday night and into early Thursday morning. CDOT will likely implement the passenger traction law so stay tuned to their Twitter and alerts page for the latest updates.

Dry conditions will return for Thursday night and Friday. The road surfaces will become mostly clear and dry by Friday morning but icy spots will still be encountered along the Berthoud, Loveland, and Vail Pass.

Extended Forecast

Our next chance for snow will then move into the mountain corridor during the second half of Saturday. I'm still holding the forecast at a dusting to 1-2 inches from Saturday evening through Sunday but stay tuned for further updates as this system evolves.

The road surfaces will once again become icy and possibly snow-packed by Saturday night and into Sunday morning so make sure your vehicle is always prepared with snow tires, mud/snow tires, and/or chains if you're traveling in the high country this weekend.

Looking further ahead, we'll return to mild and dry weather for the first half of next week. We'll then be watching the second half of next week and into Christmas weekend for additional chances for snow.

Overall, it's not all bad with multiple rounds of snow as we enter the second half of December.

Thanks for reading and let it snow!
