Snow levels to bounce up and down this week

Summary

Continued unsettled weather will prevail across Idaho this week, with a slight chance of snow early in the week. Then a Pacific low will bring a very warm southwesterly flow into the state on Wednesday, causing snow levels to rise through Thursday, until conditions cool down Friday with more snow coming on Saturday-Sunday.

Short Term Forecast

After a banner weekend with lots of powder snow at Southern Idaho ski resorts, unstable conditions will prevail early in the week, with a 20 percent chance of snow on Monday and Tuesday at most areas, while temperatures remain winter-like in the mountains. A Pacific low and southwesterly flow will bring very warm air into Idaho on Wednesday and Thursday, when a rain/snow mix is expected. Snow levels may rise to 7,000 feet when most of the precipitation falls on Wednesday and Thursday. But then, on Friday, snow levels are forecast to drop to 3,000 feet, with more precipitation expected, providing a fresh coating of snow at Idaho's ski resorts this weekend.

Extended Forecast

In the struggle between spring and winter in late March, the long-term forecast favors continued winter conditions in the mountains. The 8-14 day outlook calls for below-normal temperatures and normal precipitation levels in southern Idaho, and slightly below normal moisture in North Idaho. All of this favors taking a ski vacation in Idaho for Spring Break!
