New snow Monday 2"-3"; big storm coming Wed-Thurs.

Summary

Light snow fell overnight on Monday morning with 3" of new at Schweitzer and Lookout, and 2-3" in Central and Southern Idaho. Skies will clear off Mon-Tues. in most locations, but Pomerelle could get 6" of new Monday and 2-4" Monday night. A big storm could bring over 12" Wed-Thurs. statewide.

Short Term Forecast

Vertically stacked low pressure trough is setting up over Idaho and the West this week. By Tuesday night, it will be squarely over the top of Idaho, and then the storms come rolling in Tuesday night-Thursday with a major powder punch expected. Lingering snow showers will continue through the weekend.

The next series of storms are forecast to hit the trio of N. Idaho ski areas on Tuesday night, with Schweitzer favored to get the most snow through Thursday. A total of 1-2 feet of new snow are forecast at Schweitzer, with the bulk of the new snow expected to come Wednesday and Thursday. Silver and Lookout are forecast to get 8-14" between Tuesday night and Thursday.

GFS forecast is calling for 20" at Tamarack (map says 19.5") in the West-Central Mountains, a similar amount at Brundage, and Bogus and Sun Valley are in the 10"+ range. Over 11" is predicted in the North.

Bogus Basin, Tamarack and Brundage got 2" of new snow overnight as of Monday morning, and they're forecast to get another 2-4" on Monday during the day. There will be a break in the action on Tuesday with some sunshine, and then the big storm moves in on Wednesday morning after 11 a.m. Snow quantities are forecast to be highest at Brundage and Tamarack, where 7"-16" are forecast through Thursday.

Bogus and Sun Valley are forecast to get 2-6" through Thursday, but it will depend on how the storm system plays out. It's entirely possible they could get more than that. There will be a Southwest flow to the storm track, which usually means it can be very productive for Bogus.

European ensemble forecast looks a little different than the GFS - generally predicting less snow overall in Southern Idaho than the GFS. Very similar amounts in N. Idaho. Sun Valley is predicted to get 8.3" by Thursday.

By Thursday, the low pressure trough will begin moving to the east, but there will be a continued chance of snow through the weekend. Lighter amounts of snow are forecast at the moment.

Extended Forecast

A continued unsettled weather pattern and cold winter weather is forecast through next weekend. Colder temperatures in the low 20s will be positive for retaining the new snow we get, retaining snow-quality, and temps will be favorable for snow-making throughout the period.
