Mostly dry this week with High Pressure camped off the Coast

Summary

A few flurries are forecast in N. Idaho to start off your week, but a dome of High Pressure has moved into place off the Pacific Coast, and that will block any significant storms from moving into Idaho until this weekend. Mostly sunny weather with highs in the 20s will prevail in S. Idaho this week, and a few flurries are forecast Mon-Tues. in the Idaho Panhandle.

Short Term Forecast

Friends at Lookout Pass came up with a unique pose for the Lookout photographer on Sunday. Everyone is obviously having a good time with 2" of new snow. (Courtesy Lookout Pass).

The Saturday PM/Sunday AM storm under-delivered pretty much everywhere in Idaho except Pomerelle and Magic, which got 4-5" with that storm cycle.

Other snow totals with that storm:

  • Silver Mountain - 2"
  • Lookout - 2"
  • Brundage - 4" including 2" Monday morning.
  • Tamarack - 1"
  • Bogus Basin - 1"
  • Pebble Creek - 2"
  • Sun Valley - 1"

It was supposed to be a quick-hitting storm front, and it didn't pack as much moisture as expected. The light quality of the snow, however, was like feathers, and it freshened the base for a nice ski/ride day on Sunday.

Here's the weather map of High Pressure dominating off the coast for the next 5 days.

With a Low Pressure trough off to the east and High Pressure to the west, there will be some unsettled weather and flurries sandwiched in between in the Idaho Panhandle through Tuesday. There's a 30 percent chance of flurries and maybe 1/2" of new forecast each day. Partly cloudy to cloudy skies will prevail through Thursday before a chance of snow emerges on Friday.

Sunny skies with more of a Northwest flow and North to Northwest winds will prevail in Central and Southern Idaho this week. Even with high temps forecast in the mid-20s during the day, the NW winds will keep things chilly so be sure to bring your neck gators and plan for that!

Extended Forecast

High Pressure is expected to move off to the West by the week's end and open the door for a new storm system this weekend. Right now, the snow totals are looking like 5-10" of new Friday-Sunday, but we'll see more definition as that system moves closer.

The good news is that NOAA's Climate Prediction Center is predicting continued winter-like temps and above-average precipitation looking ahead to the first part of February.

These long-range forecast maps were generated on Sunday, Jan. 22.

Thanks for reading! My next forecast will be on Wednesday, Jan. 25.
