Light rain changes to snow showers in NY

Summary

A rainy start to the weekend as several more resorts open up throughout the region. A cold front will clear precipitation Saturday afternoon as a few snow showers develop in the northern Mid-Atlantic with a trace -2 inches of snow accumulations. Sunday clears making it a great day to get outside! Read on to see what will happen this weekend…

Update

More resorts are opening up throughout the region as snow-making is the primary source of coverage. Check out Wisp in western MD and JackFrost/BigBoulder in PA where skies were clear Friday and people were crushing it!

During the day Saturday, a storm system will track well to the north of the region and bring scattered rain showers. The good news is that most showers will fall Saturday morning and clear to the east around noon. A trailing cold front will bring the last round of precipitation briefly during the afternoon with gusty winds.

All in all, it will not be a washout and dry conditions will occur in spots of the region. The cold front will move scattered lake effect snow showers into the northern Mid-Atlantic Saturday night and Sunday morning.
Here is a look at the HRRR model’s depiction of precipitation type and intensity from 5 am Saturday, December 3rd to 7 pm Sunday, December 4th.

Cold air will allow resorts throughout the region to make snow Saturday night and for the most part of Sunday. Snow accumulations from lake effect snow showers will be a trace - 2 inches in the northern Mid-Atlantic. A few snow showers could sneak into the western Mid-Atlantic with minimal accumulations. Here is a look at the HRRR model’s snow accumulations through Sunday.

Next week will start dry and be seasonable on Monday, December 5th with snow-making continuing overnight throughout the region. The next storm will track yet again to the north on Tuesday, December 6th. Any precipitation that might start as snow will change to rain as warm air pushes north.

Next week looks to be a wet one with rounds of storms continuing to track north, which means mostly rain showers. Let’s look at the GFS model’s predicted precipitation amount (including rain and snow) from Tuesday, December 6th to Monday, December 12th.

Some of this precipitation could fall as snow, but it gives you an idea of the active storm track and wet weather ahead. As mentioned in the last few forecasts, the jet stream will finally begin to move south towards next weekend, December 10th and 11th.

This FINALLY opens the door for cold air and chances of snow in the region. This is not set in stone yet, but the pattern switch continues to look favorable. Let’s end this forecast with a look at the Euro model’s predicted upper-level pattern from 7 am Friday, December 9th to 7 am Thursday, December 15th.

The cool colors show cooler temperatures and favorable conditions for precipitation.
The warm colors show warmer temperatures and a northerly storm track for the region.

Have a great weekend, thanks for reading, and I will have the next forecast Monday morning.
