Storm Monday night, fresh snow Tuesday morning

Update

Before getting to the forecast...

I was super sad to hear that a rare inbounds avalanche on Thursday (Jan 17) left one person dead and another remains in critical condition. Thanks to decades of avalanche research and the daily work of avalanche mitigation by ski patrols around the world, avalanches within a ski area boundary are very, very rare, but the risk is not zero, as we sadly saw at Taos last week. Here is more about the incident: https://taosnews.com/stories/taos-ski-valley-searches-for-answers-after-fatal-avalanche,54589

Looking ahead, there is a storm heading to New Mexico, though the brunt of the system will track to the north of the state.

Expect snow to begin on Monday evening and continue through Tuesday morning. Accumulations should be in the 2-4 inch range and maybe up to 6 inches.

After this storm, all models continue to agree that the general weather pattern for next week and the final week of January will bring colder air to the eastern 2/3rds of the United States and Canada, and this will leave New Mexico on the southwestern edge of the storm track (the pink line below).

This pattern usually is not favorable for significant snow in New Mexico, though as storms move along this track, they could wobble a bit further west and maybe bring at least light snow early next week (maybe January 28-30).

Thanks for reading!

My next update will be on Thursday, January 24.
