Friday Freshies

Summary

A generally weak system is passing thru the area today. Snow will continue into this afternoon, adding to the totals that have already fallen. Another weak system late Saturday into Saturday night. Another storm for late Monday into Tuesday. The generally cold and active pattern continues.

Short Term Forecast

Our weak storm is slowly moving thru the region. Snow showers began yesterday and were mostly sporadic and light, with one major exception. Heavy snow occurred at Snowbasin yesterday afternoon. In total, they picked up 13" of snow already! Other areas favored in SW flow also did well. 8" at Deer Valley, 7" at Brighton. 8" at Brian Head and Eagle Point. Elsewhere, generally 2-5" fell.

Snow is filling back in this morning as the trough axis passes the region. A northwest flow behind the trough axis will aid snowfall in areas favored in that regime such as the Cottonwoods. I'd expect another 3-6" today on top of what we've already seen.

A break tonight into early Saturday before snow redevelops Saturday afternoon into Saturday evening. This is a quick hitting storm, but should be enough to drop another 4-8" or so on most Utah resorts. Sunday should be fun with fresh turns.

Then, a third system looks to impact the area late Monday into Tuesday. As discusses yesterday, the GFS continues to be more optimistic with this system than the Euro. Euro is farther west with parent low and has far less moisture associated with cold front. It would be the difference between a weak storm with a few inches, or a stronger storm with appreciable accumulation.

Extended Forecast

Beyond Wednesday, difference between the models become way more pronounced.  While the GFS is more optimistic in the short term, the Euro is much more optimistic in the long-range.  In fact, this morning's 00z run was one of the best runs we've seen all year:

Most of this snow comes from a stronger storm late next week (Friday-Saturday).  Unfortunately, this is one run of one model and the GFS and even the Euro ensembles don't really support this idea.  But this image was so beautiful I had to share.

In general, the active pattern should continue to some degree but there are just too many model differences right now for anything more specific than that.  I'll continue to keep an eye on things and keep you informed. Stay tuned!
