Sunday Morning Storm Update...

Update

I think this will be our last "storm update" post of the season :(  The storm is moving our way spiraling down the coast and pushing the cold front into Northern CA.

satellite

On radar you can seen the precip already falling in the NW corner of the state.  That will progress Southeast through the day, arriving later this afternoon and evening.  Some sun this morning and increasing clouds this afternoon.  The winds are gusting to 50 mph this morning up high but will increase to 70+ mph this afternoon on the ridges.

I was waiting for this the last few days and it finally happened this morning.  The forecast models all trended a bit drier.  The average for total precip amounts with the storm along the crest dropped from 1.2 inches to just under an inch.

precip

Most of the snow fall tonight with the heaviest snowfall this evening, and temperatures plummet into the 20's.  I would not recommend driving over the passes with the heavy snowfall and winds blowing the powdery snow around.

By Monday morning we could have 3-6 inches on the mountains on the East side of the lake, and 6-12 inches on the West side.  Then it does look like we will see snow showers during the day Monday tapering off by evening.  The last storm we didn't get much in the way of snow showers behind the front, this storm has a 2nd wave of moisture moving through Monday afternoon per the latest model runs.  So we could see an additional 1-3 inches of snow during the day Monday

Here is the final forecast.  It will become harder to verify the snowfall amounts as more and more ski resorts close and stop reporting.  Tomorrow more than half of them will be closed for the season.

forecast

The winds should drop off on Monday with ridge top gusts to only 40 mph.  So Monday could be a good powder day, great for April, and it could be the last of the season.  It will stay cold with highs only in the 20's on the mountains Monday.

We stay pretty cool the rest of the week with highs in the 30's on the upper mountains and 40's at lake level.  A weak system moving through Wednesday night could drop 1-3 inches of snow on the mountains.  Then Friday into the weekend we could finally start to warm back into the 50's with lots of sun.

The long-range model runs show a pattern that keeps us dry through the end of the month with the storm track to our North.  I'll continue to be posting about any possible storms even after ski resorts close.

Stay tuned...BA
