Winter:

We saw rain and snow over the Memorial Day weekend as expected.  Squaw, Mammoth, and Heavenly recorded 3-5 inches of snow on the upper mountains over the weekend.  That brings Squaw and Mammoth to 3 feet for May.  That is more than Mammoth recorded in December, 37 vs 35 inches.

Spring:

With the trough and moisture still over the West, we will see a chance for showers to fire up during the afternoons through the weekend.  The snow levels are now very high and will remain above 10,000 feet through the weekend.  That means just rain showers expected even in the upper elevations.  Temperatures stay cool with highs in the 60's at lake level and 50's in the upper elevations.

Summer:

High pressure will be building in over the West Coast over the next week.  That will bring a drier and warmer pattern. 

We should see an end to the afternoon showers.  Highs should warm into the 70's at lake level and 60's for the upper elevations.  We may even hit 80 at lake level by mid-week.

Long-Range:

Some long-range model runs suggest a trough pushes into the West Coast by the end of next week. 

We are likely done with cold storms bringing measurable snowfall, but it's not completely out of the question in June.  The Snow Lab averages 2 inches in June.  The last June with snow was 2016 with 7 inches, and the biggest June of the last 30 years was 2011 with 12 inches.  

We may see some cooler air and a chance for afternoon showers if we see a trough push in during June, but we will keep an eye out for any late season snow.  Until then we have Spring and Summer weather over the next 10 days.

Summer Hiking:

Last summer I was posting once a week about the weather and a travel blog about our travels to the National Parks.  Last summer we traveled 33 states to 25 National Parks.  Last week we visited 3 parks as a test run to this summer's travels.  I will post on that later this week.  This summer I will do the same, posting around once a week on the weather and on our hiking adventures.  We will be visiting 10 more National parks in Utah and Colorado.

Last week we launched our new website OpenSummit.com and today we launched the Android version of the OpenSummit app! Check them out!  They give you a high elevation hiking forecast for your favorite peaks with temperatures, wind, precip chances, and lightning chances by hour.  There is also an option to suggest a new peak if you don't see your favorite on there yet.
