A Cool Start to Summer...

Update

The Weather:

We have had a cool start to the summer this past week as a cool low-pressure system moved into Northern CA.  Highs have only been in the 60's with some gusty afternoon winds on the lake.

The cool weather will continue into Saturday as high temperatures struggle to reach 70.  We should be approaching 80 this time of year.

The low will lift north and the cool air will start to modify Sunday into next week.  But high pressure looks like it will remain off the coast and over the Central U.S.  That means we should continue to see dry weather and sunny skies, but highs only warming into the 70's next week.  That is still below average.

We should still see some afternoon breezes on the lake but not as strong as this week.

Travel & Hiking:

This week we made our way from the chilly air at Bryce Canyon over to slightly warmer air at Capitol Reef National Park.  The weather was perfect to explore the park.  The Utah parks are insanely beautiful.  Like with the rest of the country I'm having more fun exploring the treasures of the smaller less crowded parks.

Capitol Reef gave us a look at the life of early settlers, some petroglyphs, and some great rock formations as we hiked the park.

No funny snake stories this week.  Just a fun week exploring with the kids.  Last year I had to carry our youngest on the hikes quite often as she was only 3.  One great thing this summer is that she is hiking most of the trails.  We still can't go on really long or hard hikes, but we can get around to see the good stuff.

Yesterday we left Capitol Reef and headed to Moab, UT.  We left early so that we could spend most of the day exploring the northern side of Canyonlands National Park in the Island in the Sky section.  If you want to see big beautiful canyons without the crowds of the Grand Canyon this is a great spot to go to.

Last night we settled into our camping spot in Moab.  This is the area we will be in through the weekend as we explore Arches National Park and the south side of Canyonlands in the Needles section.

One thing is for sure, it is much hotter down here 4,000 feet lower than Bryce Canyon.  Highs well into the 90's.  I've been using the new OpenSummit app for our hikes.  We added the visitor centers for every National Park this week which has been really great to use!

So far we have hiked through 5 of the 10 parks planned for this 30-day trip.  Next week we head to Colorado to explore the 4 parks there!  We will be spending our 4th with strangers in Montrose, CO.  A mountain town with a similar population to Truckee, so it should be fun.  Here is the trip so far.

I hope you are all getting out to enjoy the great hiking weather in Tahoe, or wherever your travels may be taking you this summer!

Squaw is still open 2 more weekends!  So if you still don't have your ski fix for the season get it in.  We could start to see the snow fly again as early as September, and ski season is less than 5 months away!

Stay tuned...BA
