Hot Half of Summer Continues, Fire Season Starting?...
Update
Temperatures:
Temperatures for the first half of summer were slightly below average for the area. Last week high-pressure built-in and we saw the first period of prolonged heat and above-average temperatures.
It is closer to normal today (Thursday) with highs near 80 at the lake as a weak trough is exiting to the east. High pressure will build back in this weekend as the ridge sits over CA into next week.
High temperatures should be in the upper 80's at the lake through next Wednesday, and overnight lows in the 50's.
Precipitation:
We are expecting dry weather with plenty of sunshine over the next week.
There are some signs on the forecast models that moisture could begin to move up from the south later next week. We will keep an eye on that to see if we could see some thunderstorms.
Winds:
Winds are pretty light today from the northeast. Expecting typical afternoon breezes to return Friday with winds from the SW picking up each afternoon through next week. Gusts look light through Saturday. Sunday into next week we could see some stronger wind gusts on the lake in the 15-20 mph range.
Fires:
The continued hot and dry weather will continue to increase the fire danger. So far this summer things have been pretty quiet. I have heard from some bored firefighters. Looking at the CA incident map today we still only have 2 active fires on the map. The one near the Oregon border is nearly contained.
Of note is a new fire today near Shasta lake that is 0% contained and growing. With the northeast winds, it is moving southwest towards more populated area northeast of Redding. Right towards the area where my wife's family lives.
Could this be the start of a more active fire season? It's likely we will start to see activity pick up under wet storms return this fall. Let's hope everyone is being careful. At least we don't have to worry about lightning this week.
Staying Cool:
With the hot weather, we have been traveling to different lakes around the area to swim over the last few weeks. This week we took a dip in Washoe Lake.
We are likely heading to Lake Tahoe tomorrow to cool off. I hope you are all enjoying the remainder of summer and getting outside! Winter is just around the corner. If you are out hiking I hope you are all using OpenSummit.com!
Stay tuned...BA
