Another Windy Weekend with a Cold Front, Boo...

Update

We finally had a nice summer weekend last weekend after several weekends in a row that brought gusty winds and cooler temperatures. We saw some heat this week with a couple of days that brought afternoon thunderstorms. It made for some great cloud displays! Here's one I caught...

clouds

Speaking of clouds, we have another trough headed our way that will move through over the weekend.

That will bring gusty winds starting Saturday, that look to ramp up during the afternoon. The OpenSummit app for the top of Mt. Rose is showing gusts to 90+ mph by Saturday night, and staying strong through Sunday.

Temperatures for Saturday look to still warm into the 80s at lake level, but much colder air moves in with the cold front on Sunday. Highs dropping into the 60s at lake level and 50s for the mountains, even colder in the highest elevations. Here is an article I wrote on how elevation affects temperature.

We should see some clouds around on Sunday, but still expecting mostly sunny skies along with the gusty winds and cooler temperatures. Some models suggest that a few showers could pop-up during the afternoon/evening.

Next Week:

The cooler air hangs around through Tuesday but the winds start to subside Monday with lighter winds Tuesday.

We should see a warmup begin by Wednesday with highs into the 70s at lake level through the end of the week, back near seasonal averages.

Long-Range:

Some forecast models show the chance for additional troughs in the long-range for the Western U.S. the CPC's 8-14 day forecast for temperatures shows the below average.

We will have to keep an eye on the long-range for any more shots of wind or the possibility of precip and thunderstorms. The lightning from storms this week did set off a few wildfires. The high winds ahead of these systems, like this weekend, causes high fire danger and fast spreading of wildfires.

More New Features!

We have been working hard so far this summer on new features for OpenSummit. In my last post, I announced that we added radar and snow cover maps.

This week we added temperatures maps!

There are other features as well like lightning and precip forecasts.

We will be adding more features as the summer continues. We have thousands of mountains on the explore map that you can click on to get a forecast. We also have the National Park and trail forecasts, and we continue to add more.

We will be able to convert some of these great features to OpenSnow for the winter as well! Stay tuned for more updates, forecasts, and amusing stories throughout the summer.
