Brief Heat Wave...

Summary

Sunny and warm through the end of the week. A chance for afternoon thunderstorms by Thursday. Breezy with a cooldown starting by Sunday, continuing into next week.

Update

I hope that everyone had a great weekend! The weather began to warm and that continues this week. We have a strong area of high pressure over the West through Thursday.

Highs will climb into the 80s at lake level and lower through Saturday but will be a little cooler near the cold lake. The afternoon Zephyr winds from the West/Southwest look to be fairly light through Wednesday, and then pick up some Thursday into the weekend. Gusts of 20-30 mph which usually brings choppy water on the lake in the afternoons.

Highs for the upper elevations in the 70s and even 60s for the highest peaks. You can always find the forecasts for hiking in the mountains on OpenSummit

We could see afternoon thunderstorms pop up starting Thursday into the weekend. Here is a look at the GFS total precipitation forecast through the weekend showing the thunderstorms precip chances. It shows most of the precip south of Tahoe but we could see showers around the Tahoe region as well.

showers

The strong high-pressure ridge shifts east this weekend and a trough approaches the coast. We only cool a few degrees Saturday and a few more degrees Sunday. As we go into next week highs will drop into the 60s at lake level and 50s for the upper elevations.

trough

The troughing could be with us through most of next week. That could keep highs on the cooler side next week as well as breezy winds, especially during the afternoons.

I will continue to post weekly updates on Mondays throughout the summer. Be sure to be using OpenSummit for your summer mountain weather. It is especially helpful with the colder temperatures and stronger winds normally seen when hiking the higher elevations.

We have lots of new location points and map overlays including smoke maps and snow cover maps. We will be adding more through the summer!

Stay tuned...BA
