Another Heat Wave...

Windy with a few clouds to start the week. Then a heatwave will bring warm temperatures for the rest of the week. A low chance for afternoon thunderstorms Thursday and Friday. Typical afternoon Zephyr breezes starting Tuesday.

We have a trough along the West Coast bringing us some gusty winds and cooler temperatures for Monday along with a few clouds. Highs only around 70 degrees at the lake with 60s for the mountains and 50s for the higher elevations. Ridgetop winds gusting to 50+ mph, and lake winds up to 30+ mph.

The trough begins to shift north Tuesday. We stay cool with highs only in the 70s at lake level and 60s for the upper mountains. Typically afternoon southwest breezes kick in on the lake around 10-20 mph with a few higher gusts possible.

You can always find detailed forecasts for hiking in the mountains on OpenSummit, as well as lake level forecasts for locations like Homewood High & Dry Marina.

Heat Wave:

High pressure builds over the West by Wednesday with a quick warm-up that will last into the weekend.

Highs quickly warming into the 80s by Wednesday and through the weekend. High temperatures could be close to 90 degrees at some locations Thursday and Friday afternoon, well above average for June.

With the afternoon heating Thursday and Friday there could be enough moisture in the atmosphere for a few thunderstorms to pop up over the Sierra. The latest forecast model runs show the best chances being south of the Tahoe Basin. That means another dry forecast for the week ahead.

The next chance to cool down a little looks to be around the middle of next week. We will take a look at that in next Monday's forecast. I hope everyone will be able to find an enjoyable way to stay cool later this week.

I will continue to post weekly updates on Mondays throughout the summer. Be sure to be using OpenSummit for your summer mountain weather. It is especially helpful with the colder temperatures and stronger winds normally seen when hiking the higher elevations.

We have lots of new location points and map overlays including smoke and lightning maps, as well as offline maps when you're out of range. We will be adding more features throughout the summer!

Stay tuned...BA
