July Already?

Summary

A cool and breezy but sunny holiday weekend. Next week we should stay dry with a slow warming trend through the end of the week.

Update

I can't believe it is already July. That means the days are getting shorter and we are heading towards our next winter season! We are heading into a holiday weekend with yet another weekend trough that will bring us cooler weather.

cool trough

The good news/bad news is that the moisture looks to stay to our north. Good if you want a dry holiday weekend and the 4th of July, but bad for the dry conditions and fires. We should see mostly clear/sunny skies through Monday and beyond. A dry 7 days ahead it appears...

High temperatures are only in the 70s at lake level Friday into Saturday, and then only 60s for Sunday into the 4th! It may be a little chilly on the water and at the beach, especially with the afternoon winds. Temperatures are usually 3-5 degrees colder for each 1000 ft. you go up in elevation.

Typical afternoon winds come up from the southwest over the lake each afternoon, with gusts up to 20-25+ mph. That usually brings choppy/rough water, especially away from the west shore of the lake. Mountaintop winds gusting up to 40+ mph by Saturday afternoon through Tuesday, with the strongest winds up to 50+ mph possible Sunday.

We should start a slow warming trend by Tuesday through the end of next week. It looks like we may finally have a weekend with a ridge over the West Coast instead of a cool trough for the weekend of the 9th-10th. That could mean a warmer weekend.

The fire activity has picked up some this week. The Rices fire to our west was bringing some smoke into the area, but we are clear as of Friday morning. The southwest winds should keep most of the smoke to our northwest.

As we go into the heart of the summer season we will likely see the fire activity increase. We have been developing smoke and air quality maps that you can access on the Maps page. New this year is a 5-day Air Quality Index forecast that compliments the current AQI map, and we have the smoke forecast maps as well. We are building more fire weather features this summer as well!

Stay tuned, and Happy 4th!
