Hot Weekend, Cooler Next Week...

Summary

Hot and dry weather continues through Saturday. A pattern change to cooler with a chance for showers starting Sunday into next week.

Update

We have some light haze and smoke around the lake Friday morning.

haze

We have high pressure over the region and light winds, with some light northeast winds during the morning hours. That is preventing heavier smoke from blowing in from the southwest from the Mariposa fire near Yosemite.

smoke

Hot and dry weather continues through Saturday. Highs near 90 degrees at lake level, slightly cooler as you hike up in elevations. Light winds are expected through Saturday as well.

Pattern Shift:

Starting Sunday into early next week the high pressure breaks down and sets up farther east over the U.S. and a cool trough nudges into the West.

trough

Highs dip in the lower 80s at lake level for Sunday and then cool into the 70s by Monday and likely through at least midweek. Overnight lows into the 50s with cool mornings reminding us that fall is not far off!

Afternoon gusty winds from the southwest return to the lake with gusts up to 20+ mph during the afternoons. That will bring back choppy boating conditions. Ridgetop winds could reach 30-40+ mph by Monday afternoon into Tuesday.

With the southerly flow returning some monsoonal moisture could push farther north. Most forecast models keep showers to the south of the Tahoe Basin, but an isolated shower or thunderstorm is possible during the afternoon starting Sunday into Monday and Maybe Tuesday.

So far the fire season seems pretty quiet compared to the last few years. Hopefully, that continues through the end of the summer. I'll let you know when heat or smoke could return in the weekly forecasts, and you can always keep an eye on the smoke and air quality as well as other weather on our Maps Page.
