A Few Showers and Nice Weather...

Summary

A chance for showers through Friday. Cooler into Saturday. Nice weather is expected Sunday into next week. Barring any fires popping up that bring in smoke...

Update

I am 2 for 2 so far this summer with forecasting low smoke and quiet fires in the weekly update, to then have a fire explode the next day, SMH. The smoke from the McKinney Fire Thursday is mainly up in far northern CA near the border.

I will still say the fire season seems quieter than the last few, but I'll knock on wood today. Hopefully, another fire doesn't pop up this weekend.

Weather Forecast:

Low pressure off the West Coast is helping with the southerly flow drawing monsoonal moisture northward into the Southwestern U.S. Right where we need it to help ease the drought! Here is the precipitation forecast for the next 7 days.

The best chance for showers around the Tahoe Basin will be Thursday & Friday, especially in the afternoon. But most of the moisture has been staying to our south and east. Watch for a few showers to pup up that could have some heavy rain and lightning.

Highs are only in the 70s at lake level for Friday into Saturday. The 70s to near 80 degrees Sunday through next week. Looks like some nice weather if the smoke stays away.

Typical afternoon winds coming up on the lake each day from the southwest, with gusts up to 15-20+ mph. That makes for choppy conditions. Ridgetop winds will be variable and gusting up to 20-30+ mph at times through the period.

Winter:

I know that most of you come here for snow forecasts. Starting in August through the fall we start to talk about the upcoming winter and very brave (and wrong more than right) long-range forecasts come out. First out is usually the Farmers' Almanac forecast which came out last week.

We are expecting another La Nina season, the 3rd one in a row! That is somewhat rare and I'll have more analysis on that historically as we go into the fall. We can go either way on La Nina seasons.

2 seasons ago was below average but cold and the skiing was pretty good most of the season. Last season was above average for snowfall at the Snow Lab and the north side of the lake, and below average for the south side. But it was a bookend winter with big snow in October, December, & April, and not much in the heart of winter. We've also had big winters in La Nina seasons. They are chaotic.

Stay tuned...BA
