As of Thursday, March 19, 2020, the majority of ski areas in North America are closed in an attempt to limit the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Yes, I know that a few ski areas are staying open for now, but even these mountains may close sooner rather than later due to government and community pressure to limit social contact.

If you are excited to chase snowstorms this spring, please note that I have personally received requests from first responders and community leaders that they do not want a lot of people coming to mountain towns and definitely don’t want to deal with potential snow-related injuries when their focus should be on COVID-19. At the very least, please be extra responsible and cautious so that you’re safe and do not cause a burden to healthcare workers.

For backcountry skiing and riding, PLEASE be as educated as possible, go with someone that knows what they are doing, and check the avalanche forecast from your local avalanche center.

Our automated forecasts here on OpenSnow will continue to be updated multiple times per day, every day, and I hope that most mountain cams will continue to work as long as resorts can keep them operational.
