Break Time

Summary

Yet another day with fresh snow. We will clear out today with cool temps. Aside from a system later this week that could affect southern Utah, we are now entering a dry pattern for the next 10 days or so.

Short Term Forecast

Our storm cycle is coming to a close.  Orographic snow showers and lake effect/enhanced snow overnight gave us one last solid burst of snow last night.  Amounts vary greatly, but generally 3-10" of snow being reported since close of lifts yesterday.  Since last Wednesday, we have now seen anywhere from 1.5 to 4 FEET of new snow in Utah mountains.  Here is a graph showing Brighton's new snow.

5 days in a row of fresh snow!  48" total!

We will remain cool for a couple days and the snow will stay fresh, but high pressure is taking control now.  A closed low system will track thru the desert southwest later this week.  Main impact will be a chance for some snow showers in the mountains of southern Utah on Thursday and Friday, but those showers should stay south of the Wasatch.

Otherwise, dry weather is in store for the rest of this week.  Good chance for resorts to open up all their terrain.

Extended Forecast

The big question now is when will this dry period end? The good news is that both the GFS and Euro have a system pushing into the west coast on December 10.  As is often the case, this initial system looks like it will get sheared apart before reaching Utah and we may see little if any precip.  A follow-up system may have better luck around December 12-13.  My guess is that will be our next solid chance for snowfall.  Of course, this is 9-10 days out and subject to change.  We shall keep an eye on this potential flip back to active weather.  For now, let's enjoy the fresh snow while its still fresh!
